Sleep like a dog

I kennel my dog. OH MY GOD YOU KENNEL YOUR DOG?!! YOU HORRIBLE PET HATER BABY EATER!! Now that we've gotten that out of the way, yes, I kennel my dog. A lot of people think that it's horrible and mean and I should not be allowed to have a dog but I've read and heard a lot of positive things about kenneling so shut up. I go home every day at lunch and I usually check in after work if I'm playing ball that night or going out. I say usually because sometimes I don't have time to go home after work but, in those cases, when he's in there for most of the day, I let him sleep with me at night. Or at least I try.

Some nights work out well and we both fall asleep right away. Some nights, like last night, not so much. Some nights he just can't quite decide where he wants to settle for the night. Does he want to sleep on my left side? On my right side? On the bottom of the bed? On the top of the bed? Right in front of my face? HOLY CRAP WHAT WAS THAT NOISE?!! BARK BARK BARK!! Oh, it was nothing. Ok, carry on. On my left side? On my right side?

By midnight I had had enough and it was back in the kennel. He promptly fell asleep. I did not. Mostly I was trying to figure out if I had just had a heart attack after being scared shitless from the barking. It turns out I didn't have a heart attack. Now I'm just really tired. It's going to be a fun day.

I think it's great that you kennel your dog, that way he can't eat your ipod.

Madison started out being kenneled. (kennelled?) (Nope. kenneled. I don't know) I was just lazy and didn't want to fight with her any more. Also, I thought it would be boring. The other two never got used to a kennel b/c my Dad raised them and he believes in free range puppies. Oh how I wish they had been kenneled.

I'm going to try and let him out on a trial basis for short periods of time when I'm not at home. We'll see how that goes. People make me feel guilty. Jerks.
If anything I'll have something funny to blog about when he eats my couch or craps in my plants.

We kenneled our dog when she was a puppy. There seemed to be a natural period when she matured enough to know the difference between the security of the kennel and the comfort of wide open spaces. We did kennel her in a bathroom with the doorway blocked with a 3 foot sheet of wood. She had her actual kennel to sleep in during the day but she could get out a stroll around and do her "bidness" with out getting into things she wasn't supposed to. Once she was potty trained I think that was when we let her have free roam of the house. I seem to recall we had very few incidences of her chewing things. She was a pretty good puppy, now an old grandma.

Jack, you've convinced me! Mostly because you used the word "bidness". I'm going to give it a shot. Baby steps though.

Baby steps are exactly what is needed. One room at a time!!

Kenneling is not cruel and anyone who makes you feel guilty clearly hasn't done their research. I've done enough over the years. Dogs do perfectly well in a kennel for up to five hours. Particularly if they get tons of quality, energy-burning exercise before and after.
