Vegetabley challenged

Every day I get an emailed recipe from this dude Dr. Weil for some reason. I didn't sign up for them and I have no idea why I get them, but they promote healthy eating and I like healthy eating so I thought, hey why not keep the buggers? So I do.

One of the first recipes I got was for steamed Kale. I've never had Kale but it's supposed to be really good for you and full of antioxidants and I've always liked trying new things so I went to the grocery store to buy some.

They didn't have any or, at least none of the signs said "Kale" and I've never seen Kale so, in my mind, they didn't have any.

Last Friday night, when I went grocery shopping instead of having a life, I was walking around the produce area(because on Friday evenings when everyone else is out doing fun stuff, you can actually walk around the produce area at your leisure without wanting to ram your fist into someone's face)and I saw a sign that said "Kale". I was so excited that I immediately grabbed me up some Kale, shoved it in a bag, and happily made my way to the checkout where I DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TO WAIT IN LINE! It was a pretty amazing night all around.

When I got home, I quickly went to my internet recipe folder and clicked on the steamed Kale link. The vegetable in the recipe did not look like the vegetable I had bought. I apparently did not buy Kale. So I had corn instead. Not as much fun.

Now, every time I have a break at work(all day)I have been googling various vegetable types to try to figure out what I bought. I've googled "green vegetables", "leafy vegetables" and, after I realized today that it looked more like a giant onion with a fern top "giant onion with a fern top". No dice.

And then I just googled "vegetables". Apparently it's fennel. What the hell is fennel? And, more importantly, what the hell do I do with fennel? WHAT KIND OF MESS HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO?!!

Thanks to my friend Google, I found out that I can roast fennel. And roast it I shall. I'll let you know how it turns out.

What kind of crazy vegetable adventures will I get into tomorrow I wonder?!!!

maybe you are on to something. like, how tiramisu was the 90's?

maybe fennel is the future.

You have adventures others can only dream of.

I've been having the same kind of fun trying to recreate Vietnamese and Cambodian foods I had over there - very interesting. Kale kind of looks like the leaves from a cauliflour plant and I usually only see it in specialty markets in the summer.

I thought Fennel was more of an herb than a vegetable, but then, what the hell do I know? I use my oven for storage.

Fennel has a distinct licorice taste too it. The white bulby type part can be sliced thinly and added into salads or soups. You can make a gratin with it. I have had it once or twice it's o.k.... but it's no KALE!!!
